Unstable
fine sands or silts can be supported by water, provided that a hydraulic
head in excess of at least 2 m is maintained. This positive hydrostatic
pressure inside the borehole causes the water to flow away from the wall
of the borehole, thus preventing sand particles from falling into the
borehole and collapse of the borehole.
