Subject: ULITMATE SOIL BEARING CAPACITY

We always determine the ultimate bearing capacity for soil commonly using Terzaghi, Meyerhof or Hanzon equations. Upon getting the ultimate bearing capacity, a factor is applied to it to get the allowable bearing capacity. At which stage of the calculations above is the settlement control being addressed and what are the settlement limits.

Similarly for piles, at which stage of the calculations in getting the pile ultimate capacity is the settlement control being addressed and also what are the settlement limits?

For BS8004, a table showing presumed bearing capacity is shown for various soil but specified that these values have FOS against shear failure but not settlememt. Why is it so and so are the presumed bearing capacity values equivalent to allowable or ultimate bearing capacity?
