  Dear Friends,

Many of us will be pleased to learn that there are efforts on the way by ISSMGE at the forthcoming 16th ICSMGE Conference (Kobe, Japan) to bring recent issues under the main themes such as :-

Area 3 (Environmental Issues in Geotechnical Engineering) and
Area 4 (Enhancing Natural Disaster Systems)

Off late (26th Dec tsunami) and many recent disturbances to the environment such as floods, earthquakes etc; these have become great concern to geotechnical engineers.
For instance; Area (3) has raised this issue - Preparedness for Anticipated Sea-Level Rise. I think what's important is that 1) there needs to be a centralised information database set up for the public and researchers across borders leading to information such as case histories etc, 2) development of early warning systems and 3) guidelines for disaster reductions. Area (4) raises some issues on disaster reduction and mitigations. A JTC on landslides is already set up on ISSMGE and perhaps other hazards should also be covered. There are current efforts by other other organisation to draw up guidelines such as the IABSE (Int. Assoc. of Bridge & Structural Engineering) on coastal disaster reductions. I am not aware of such efforts made by any geotechnical organisation at this moment. I think you will agree geohazards in general will involve several multi-disciplinary areas and need the asssistance of our learned colleagues from different fields.

I am happy to say that it is already a good start.

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Singh, P.
