I am looking for papers that address the settlement potential of organic sands, herein defined as SP, SP-SM, or SM classified sands with organic contents (based on organic loss on ignition testing) perhaps in the 6 to 15 percent range (by weight). Soils with less than 5% organic content are not usually a concern, those with more than 15% usually are. These soils are common in our area, and are normally removed beneath buildings. In some cases, these soils have high SPT blow count, and/or are located below the water table, and removing them is not always viewed as necessary. We have typically looked at these soils as having relatively small long term setllement potential, but some settlement potential nontheless, and left the risk to the Owner to decide. I would like to know if anyone has addressed this issue in the literature.
