Respected All,
I am doing my Masters in Geotech and Geoenvironmental engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi INDIA. In view of present scenario I have chosen my masters Thesis topic as " Road Embankment Construction with dredged Material". Since Many port connectivity projects are coming up in India...but majority of the research work has been done in the marine work and dredging....little information is available on the dredging for highway construction , as In India we successfully constructed our first Expressway ( Delhi-Noida Toll Bridge-www.dndflyway.org) across the one of the major river of North India YAMUNA. In the detailed review I am not able to findout the answer related to this technology for its use on Road Construction like;
1. What will be the effect of earthquake on dredged material, its dynamic properties, related to its grain size distribution ? 2. What are the quality control parameters for highway construction with dredged material ? 3. Due to high permeability of the dredged material...what safeguard we should consider in flexible and rigid pavement design. w.r.t its sub surface drainage conditions ? 4. How to control the erosion of dredged material with the use of geosynthetics ? its suitability ? 5. How to formulate the quality assurance plan, in terms of SCPT and SPT test, based upon the height and width of the embankment?
these are the few questions, about which I like to know something. Through this mail I am just looking forward for ur help for my thesis work. Please suggest me some literature on this also. Please do the needful
With Regards,

Dear friend,
you are asking an interesting question, which however is difficult to answer in general terms. Dredging can be performed by different methods. However, the most important aspects are of course the dredged material and the placement method. Therfore, you should as a first step try to identify the soil properties by suitable methods, such as penetration tests. Thereafter, you should be able to determine the strength and deformation characteristics. If you are in any doubt, read a geotechnical text; for instance the books posted on the Geoforum start page.
Now to your specific questions:
1. What will be the effect of earthquake on dredged material, its dynamic properties, related to its grain size distribution ?
- In loose, water-saturated materials, cyclic loading may cause liquefaction. In dry material, settlements may occur. Under unfavourble conditions, failure may be induced.
2. What are the quality control parameters for highway construction with dredged material ? - Same as for other placement methods.
3. Due to high permeability of the dredged material...what safeguard we should consider in flexible and rigid pavement design. w.r.t its sub surface drainage conditions ? - The permeability of dredged material is usually higher in the horizontal direction. Check for fines content and the zone of partially saturated material.
4. How to control the erosion of dredged material with the use of geosynthetics ? its suitability ? - Yes
5. How to formulate the quality assurance plan, in terms of SCPT and SPT test, based upon the height and width of the embankment? - You should start with making design calculations (settlements and stability) and thereafter choose the required strength and modulus values. This will help you to establish the SPT or preferably CPT parameters.
