My question is one of terminology, not engineering. I am a translator faced with a French term, appui préfondé, literally "prefounded support". This, apparently, is a pile that is partially exposed, either because part of it stands above ground and is used as structural framing, or because a ground-level slab is cast on top of the piles and the ground around the piles is excavated in top-down construction.

Does this concept have a name in English?

Thanks very much for any help.

The only closely related term I've come across is 'plunge column' to describe a steel column section inserted into the top of a cast in situ concrete pile.
